Our new unit is percent.
The big ideas in this unit are:
- percentages are values where the total is always 100 (per cent means out of 100)
- we can show percents as fractions, decimals, or as %
- we can convert any percentage to a fraction (using place value) and a decimal (using division)
- we can use mental math to find any percent, by breaking the percentage into easier percents that we know, and then adding/subtracting them
(easy percents are 100%, 50%, 25%, 20%, 10%, 5% and 1%)
- percent OF any number really means we can multiply that number by the percent as a decimal.
