Today in class we started our review with a cut & color project to create a back to school crayon. Each piece of the crayon had an addition or subtraction sentence that needed to be solved to use the color legend correctly. Sums and differences were numbers less than 3. Everyone did great - it seems that understanding of idea of adding / subtracting was not forgotten over the summer!
If your student is struggling to understand adding or subtracting, I like to use a basket of apples as an example:
ADDING - the first number is the number of apples you start with, and the second number is how many you are given, EX. 2+1 you start with 2 apples in a basket, and your friend gives you 1 more, now you have how many?
SUBTRACTING - the first number is again how many you start with in the basket, and the second number is how many you give away. EX. 3-1 you start with 3 apples in your basket, and give away one apple. How many do you have left in your basket?
**An extra color & cut sheet (a worm and apple) was sent home for extra practice. It does not need to be returned, but is for you to enjoy at home! :) **
