Grade 8 English Language Arts
According to the Manitoba English Language Arts Curriculum, the Grade 8 General Learning Outcomes are as follows:
• Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences.
• Comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, literacy and media texts.
• Manage ideas and information.
• Enhance the clarity and artistry of communication.
• Celebrate and build community.
In order to meet these outcomes, students will engage in a wide variety of activities, such as:

- Reading and Writing: novels, short stories, poetry, essays, quick writes, editing, journals, independent book reports, letters, writing centers
- Listening and Speaking: formal listening exercises, tests, speeches, debates, TUSC (Totally Unique Speaking Club)
- Viewing and Representing: portfolios, collages, posters, charts, comic strips, diagrams, dioramas, video/audio/computer presentations, research skills
Assessment:
Student progress will be measured throughout the year in the following 3 areas:
Comprehension (Reading, Listening and Viewing) 40%
In-class exercises, discussions, skits, questions, novel studies, short stories
Communication (Writing, Speaking, Representing) 40%
TUSC, grammar, spelling, writing centers, journals, writing process, group projects, presentations, posters, essays, speeches
Critical Thinking and Self-Assessment 20%
Peer and self-evaluations, portfolios, debates, group work, research, organizing info and ideas.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
Written in May over 4 days. This process will combine all 3 assessment categories listed above, using skills the students have learned and developed throughout the year..
